The LNER's most famous locomotives were designed by Sir Nigel Gresley and Arthur Peppercorn. Appointed CME of the GNR aged just 32, Gresley moved to the LNER in the 1923 grouping. Here he was to become inexorably linked with the record-breakers Flying Scotsman and Mallard.
Peppercorn, a great admirer of Gresley's work, then set out to create more practical Pacific locomotives. A3 Pacific: An icon of British steam, Flying Scotsman was long used as the flagship locomotive of the LNER, representing the company nationally and internationally. Rare colour footage from the 1960s coupled with modern preservation film bring this legandary locomotive to life. A4 Pacific: The most distinctive of all British locomotives, the streamlined A4 Pacifics were Sir Nigel Gresley's masterpieces. The steam speed record of 126 mph set in 1938 by the most famous A4, Mallard, has never been beaten. Key design features were what made the A4 such a world-beater. A1/A2 Pacific: Arthur Peppercorn was greatly influenced by his predecessor Sir Nigel Gresley, and this was evident in his A1 and A2 Pacific designs. However, the reliability of his locomotives, allied with the classic aesthetics of earlier classes, brought Peppercorn out of Gresley's shadow.
